3 Tracks To Become An Engineer At SupOptique

Students at SupOptique can integrate three different teaching tracks during their training. Each track happens around the three different campuses at Paris-Saclay, Saint-Étienne, and Bordeaux.

Each of these programs leads to the same, unique SupOptique engineering degree, and offers each individual the opportunity to benefit from different experiences throughout their studies.

Classic Track

The classical track is the traditional engineering program at SupOptique. During the three-year program, students follow courses in science, practical work, and engineering.

At the end of each year, they complete an internship in a company or laboratory, either in France or abroad, to gain practical experience.

In their final year, students in the classical track have the opportunity to pursue a double degree with over 11 universities, including Paris-Saclay, Bordeaux, and Saint-Étienne.

They can also study abroad for a semester or a year at one of our many partner institutions such as KTH in Sweden, the Institute of Optics of Rochester, or the College of Optical Sciences in Tucson.

Innovation-Entrepreneurship Track

The Innovation-Entrepreneurship Track (FIE) is a leading French program for aspiring tech entrepreneurs.

From their second year, students can take the reins by putting together a startup project, working closely with tech companies or research labs.

Each week, time is dedicated to innovation training within the Institut d'Optique's entrepreneurial ecosystem, (link: écosystèmes dédiés à l’entrepreneuriat de l’Institut d'Optique) benefiting from specialized teaching, tech coaching, and access to a FabLab.

FIE students follow a rigorous scientific curriculum while also developing their entrepreneurial skills. They must complete internships by the end of the year, with the option to focus on their startup in France or further afield.

Students who wish to do so can use the FIE as a springboard to start their own entrepreneurial venture: over 20 innovative companies have been created by SupOptique graduates since the FIE's inception!

Apprenticeship Track

SupOptique offers an apprenticeship program leading to an engineering degree. Apprentice engineers alternate between classroom learning at the school, where they follow the standard engineering curriculum, and on-the-job training in an industrial setting. These practical work experiences take place throughout the year, coinciding with the internship periods of their full-time peers. Upon successful completion of the program, apprentices are awarded the same engineering diploma as their classmates.

As employees of their companies, apprentices receive a salary and are immersed in the professional world from the start. Their increased autonomy and maturity make them highly sought-after by employers, accelerating their career progression.

In addition to the engineering program, apprentices can specialize further by pursuing a Master's degree (M2) in physics, photonics, or signal processing. For those seeking a broader skill set, double degree programs with prestigious institutions like ESPCI Paris and HEC Paris are available. Please note that the second part of the double degree with HEC Paris commences after the completion of the apprenticeship and the third year of the engineering program.
