"As a woman, physics isn't for me ! "
Preconception:
Promoting gender equality in the scientific world and the work world is a central concern for SupOptique.

Awareness From The Beginning Of Classes

Forum Photonique 2022

For several years now, the Institut d'Optique has been working to promote gender equality in education and the professional and academic world of photonics.

Each year, we offer awareness campaigns and actions on themes related to equality, such as:

  • Jointly organizing conferences with students (Sandrine Rousseau's conference in 2019), events around International Women's Day (round table, exhibition of photos of women scientists in 2022)
  • Campaign on menstrual poverty (distribution of sanitary products to female students, menstrual underwear to scholarship students in the fall of 2022)
  • Organizing a speed-dating event with high school girls in partnership with the Femmes et Mathématiques association to promote scientific careers to girls.

Students from all grades work together and with kindness to defend the rights of women in the professional and scientific world, with the help of two gender equality referents (link: Egalité Femmes-Hommes), nommés à l'Institut.

Each year since 2013, the members of the Sports Bureau and the Students' Bureau (BDE) have organized the first exclusively female tournament, (link: premier tournoi exclusivement féminin), bringing together all female athletes from the Saclay plateau, the GOST - Girls Only SupOptique Trophy. Its 8th edition this year welcomed more than 400 female athletes from 24 different schools in 11 sports disciplines.

Startups And High Flying Research, Pioneers At SupOptique

Over the past few years, a growing number of women have made significant contributions to the field of photonics. Driven by their determination and expertise, they have forged remarkable careers (link: brillantes carrières). From launching successful startups to conducting groundbreaking research with real-world applications, these women serve as inspiring role models (link: de véritables ambassadrices) for the entire scientific community and beyond.

Combat Against Violence And Discrimination

All actions taken to promote women's place in the scientific world and the successful examples of women SupOpticiennes in their professional lives have led to a more widespread movement against all forms of discrimination or violence in recent years at SupOptique.

Students, school staff (administration and faculty), and more generally the entire SupOptique community have mobilized around new ideas to defend and promote, in the fight against discrimination and violence.

Among the first actions, concerning sexist and sexual violence (link: violences sexistes et sexuelles) (VSS), for example, one can cite the establishment of:

  • a warning email and a listening cell that offers an interview within 48 hours, confidential, conducted by the two gender equality referents, trained in these issues
  • mandatory training for students on VSS as soon as they arrive in the first year of the program
  • a questionnaire developed by a student/teacher working group on VSS
  • an inter-establishment charter for parties, by the students

Mixed student/teacher working groups (link: groupes de travail mixtes élèves/profs) are also conducting reflections on the integration of students with disabilities(link: intégration des étudiant·e·s en situation de handicap) and on the prevention and fight against all forms of discrimination, with the help of a "Diversity-Disability" referent appointed at the Institute.
