Although small, the Languages Department of Institut d’Optique Graduate School takes a lively part in the life of our school. English (also called LV1 in the French programme) is compulsory for those taking the Engineering Curriculum and we strive to equip all students with the language skills they need. Where English is concerned, this means being proficient enough to study, work and research in English effectively.

In second languages (called LV2 in French) we offer a choice between German, Spanish, Japanese, Chinese and Swedish. Occasionally, and within the opportunities offered by neighbouring schools on this new and growing Paris-Saclay University, courses can also be followed in rarer languages but only on an ad hoc basis. Also, on the Bordeaux and Saint-Étienne campuses, a broad choice of languages is available and at different levels, namely,

  • in Saint-Étienne: Chinese, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese and Spanish – this is done in cooperation with the partner school Télécom Saint-Étienne.
  • in Bordeaux : Arabic, Chinese, German, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and Swedish, inter alia. This is possible thanks to our working agreement with the University of Bordeaux Montaigne.

The number of weeks per term is variable. Students who have not had sufficient grounding in English when they join the school, are offered extra tutoring so as to catch up and reach a level corresponding to at least B2 (on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) at the end of their first year. By the end of their academic career, all students should be certified at least at the C1 level of linguistic competence.

Emphasis is on the cultural aspects of language, inseparable from language learning especially as students often choose a language that will help them in their career plans, as well as to help them in the shorter term to find and prepare an internship abroad.

For our international students, we offer French language classes (French as a Foreign Language, called FLE in the French system. This counts as LV2.
