Overview

Although it is a small Department, the languages section is an integral and lively part of the school. English is compulsory and the training is rigorous so as to make it a reliable and efficient tool for all kinds of scientific and professional communication.

As for second languages, we offer a choice between German, Spanish, Japanese, Chinese and Swedish. Occasionally, and within the opportunities offered by neighbouring schools on this new and growing SACLAY Campus, courses can also be followed in rarer languages such as Russian and Italian.

Usually, two hours of language tuition a week are provided, but students who have not had sufficient grounding in English when they join the school are offered extra teaching so as to catch up and reach a level corresponding to at least B2 ( on the European Reference scale) at the end of their first year.

By the end of their schooling, all students should be fluent, comfortable with studying, researching and generally working in English - which corresponds to a C2 level.

For our international students, we offer French language classes: beginner and, if a sufficient number of students is attained, intermediate level. This is usually twice a week, and an average of 3 hours of tuition (per week) is provided. International students are exempted from English classes, naturally, but may be required to study a second language depending on their chosen curriculum.
